The American Council of the Blind (ACB) and the Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) are proud to announce the winners of the 2023 BADIE awards. Celebrating the Benefits of Audio Description In Education, the contest invites students who are blind or have low vision to watch an audio described (AD) video and write an essay evaluating the quality and usefulness of the AD.

About Audio Description
Films and videos entertain, educate, and inform, but they can be difficult to understand for people who can’t see or can’t see well. Audio description (AD) provides access to visual images through succinct and vivid descriptions of elements that are crucial to understanding the creator’s intention. In addition to its benefits for students who are blind or have low vision, AD can be helpful for those with learning disabilities, and it can boost literacy for all learners. Audio description is an important component of all inclusion and diversity efforts and can be found in museums, at performing arts centers, at National Parks, and in broadcasts of live events.

ACB is a national member-driven organization that strives to increase the independence, security, equality of opportunity, and quality of life for people who are blind or have low vision. The Audio Description Project (ADP) advocates for more and better quality audio description. About the Described and Captioned Media Program
The Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) provides premium media designed for students with disabilities and is a leading resource for families and teachers. DCMP was founded in 1950 and is supported by the Department of Education and managed by the National Association of the Deaf. DCMP provides services designed to improve the academic achievement of students who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing, or deaf-blind.
