1. Greetings, I am Michael Garrett.  I, along with my wonderful wife Peggy, currently reside in the great metropolis of Missouri City, Texas.  Our city is one of the fastest growing suburban   areas in the country and is located right next to Houston.

I am announcing my candidacy to serve in the officer position as Treasurer of ACB.  I’d like to do so first because of my passion for ACB, its vision and its purposes.  Additionally, I believe I have the requisite qualifications, having experienced a 28 year career in the banking and finance industry.  I also previously served on the ACB Board and I believe I am quite familiar with the inner workings of the Board and the organization itself.

ACB has already elected a strong Board and has secured a hard working, competent staff.  This collection of individuals represents the team that is charged with leading ACB forward.  I’d like the opportunity to serve with this select group to help the organization experience a bright future.

2. My contribution to ACB includes serving the whole gamut of organizational levels.  With the exception of Treasurer, I’ve served every office in my local chapter and now hold the office of Secretary.  At the State level, I currently serve as First Vice President, chairing the Membership and Scholarship Committees, in addition to serving on other committees.  I also serve as President of our Braille Revival League affiliate and Treasurer of our Library Users affiliate.

At the ACB level, over the years I’ve served on a number of committees and taskforces.  Currently I serve as Chairman of the ACBES Board, co-chair of MMS and participate on several other committees primarily dealing with the financial outlook of ACB.

As it evolves, every organization has inflection points.  I’ve been privileged to be a part of some key inflection points at ACB.  I served on the selection committee that brought Lane Waters to ACB and I was a member of the committee that selected the firm which shepherds our investment accounts.  I’d like the opportunity to continue serving ACB to help insure a stable financial future.

3. I see two challenges facing ACB.  We all talk about the need to bring in younger members to our organization.  I’d like to see ACB develop more youth oriented workshops and other activities designed for youth and young adults.  We have a great foundation with ACB Students and Next Generation, but we can build on that foundation.

And then of course, I will always say “we can do more if we have more.”  Over the passed 15 years, our financial condition has experienced significant growth.  However, in order to expand our programs and services, our finances must also expand.  That means we need to embark on a two pronged approach to grow our funds to a stable level that will in turn allow us to increase programming and service offerings.

I believe we can meet these challenges and I want to be a part of the team that keeps the process in motion.

ACB: Together for a Bright Future!
