About ICB

The Illinois Council of the Blind (ICB) works to improve education and employment opportunities and the overall quality of life for Illinois citizens who are blind or visually impaired.  We do this through education and advocacy activities.  Some examples of work we’ve done recently include:

  • Working with Illinois’ National Federation of the Blind affiliate, Equip for Equality, Illinois’ Protection and Advocacy agency and others to make voting by mail accessible.
  • Participating in structured negotiations to make Walgreens prescriptions accessible.

We also work to make sure the Illinois Bureau of Blind Services is providing quality service to people who are blind or visually impaired.

We have five chapters, three geographically based and two special interest.  Our geographic chapters are the American Council of the Blind of Metropolitan Chicago, Springfield District Association of the Blind and Madison County Association of the Blind.  Our special interest chapters are the Mary Bryant Home Association of the Blind and our newest, the Illinois Braille Revival League.  We hold our Conference and Convention at least every two years, with our next one scheduled for April 28-30, 2023 in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.  We publish the Illinois Braille Messenger, our quarterly newsletter.

Dues are $20 per year, which includes your ACB Membership dues.  We also offer a life membership for $500.
