AAVL Seeks New Members
Are you experiencing vision loss, or do you have a family member or friend who is? The Alliance on Aging and Vision Loss (AAVL) offers peer support and informative program presentations at ACB’s annual convention, and we are working to resume publication of our newsletter in order to broaden and extend our reach. Join the organization and learn more.
Annual dues, payable to AAVL, are only $15. To join, send your dues to AAVL Treasurer, 4130 Forest Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45212. Be sure to include your name, address, phone number and e-mail address, along with your format preference for “The ACB Braille Forum” (e-mail, large print, braille, cassette or data CD).
Teachers Establish Scholarship in Memory of Marcia Dresser
The American Association of Blind Teachers (AABT) has created a scholarship in memory of Marcia Dresser, long-time active member and former president of the American Association of Blind Teachers. A generous contribution from a current AABT member has made it possible to award the scholarship for the first time this July at the ACB national convention. The scholarship will be presented to an undergraduate or graduate student who is visually impaired and studying for a career in teaching.
We would like to continue this scholarship in the future, but we’ll need your help. Each year we will need a minimum of $1,200 in order for the scholarship to be viable. If we can collect a sufficient number of contributions from AABT members, we can then use those funds to create a matching program when soliciting gifts from the larger ACB membership. That is, we would like to be able to advertise that, for example, AABT will match the first $500 of contributions to the scholarship. We hope to begin publicizing the scholarship in the late summer, shortly after the awarding of the initial scholarship, but we wanted to alert “Forum” readers in advance about our plans. Your participation is critical to this effort. By contributing, you not only honor Marcia’s memory but help a visually impaired student on the road to entering our profession. Checks may be made payable to AABT and sent to John Buckley, 1025 Ree Way, Knoxville, TN 37909.
