Who We Are
Blindness and low vision touch many families today. ACB Families is for anyone whose family includes someone who is blind or who is experiencing low vision. If you are blind or visually impaired, or if you are related to or living with a person who is blind or visually impaired, ACB Families is for you.
What We Do
ACB Families provides information, peer support and friendship. No matter who you are or where you live, you can participate in ACB Families. We hold two ACB Community conference calls each month. Our families support call is the first Sunday of the month; we share questions and tips, discuss interesting topics, and enjoy informative speakers. We conduct organization business and plan future events on the third Sunday of the month; a program is also sometimes included. Examples of past topics are family finances and investments, accessible gift ideas, fun and useful apps and Alexa skills, special education and school issues, and strategies for living with the "new normal".
Calls are on the Zoom platform, so you can join from any cell, landline or smartphone. Some calls are broadcast on ACB Radio and are available as podcasts. Calls are at 9:00 PM Eastern Time (6:00 PM Pacific). Watch our Families email list or the ACB Community Events schedule for ways to join the calls.
ACB Families presented five exciting programs at the 2020 ACB Virtual Conference and Convention. We visited Hawaii before it became a part of the United States; traveled on the ill-fated Sultana steamboat as Union soldiers returned home from the Civil War; met Helen Keller and explored her papers and artifacts now housed at American Printing House for the Blind; learned how braille or audio instructions for Lego sets came to be; and sat around a virtual campfire and listened to stories told by well-known Talking Book narrator Jack Fox. Exciting programming is being planned for 2021.
