TITLE: Proofreader

National Braille Press is a non-profit publishing house in Boston, Massachusetts, providing braille materials of superior quality to blind readers worldwide for more than eighty years. We are seeking a detail-oriented, organized, and diligent braille proofreader. He/she must communicate effectively, comprehend and apply braille rules and standards, and be motivated to make decisions independently in a fast-paced environment committed to accuracy.
SCOPE
The role of the proofreader is to verify that transcribed braille material is complete and accurate. Working with the Transcription and Production Departments, the proofreader ensures that braille produced at NBP conforms to BANA standards and Braille Format guidelines, the braille is a replication of the print text, and the hard copy braille is clear, well-formed, and properly bound. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the proofreader to ensure that NBP provides the highest quality braille possible.
REQUIREMENTS
Work requires a business background generally equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
Excellent English language, spelling, and grammar skills.
Minimum certification in Literary Braille Proofreading by the Library of Congress. Certification in Nemeth Proofreading preferred.
Command of PC-based computers and Microsoft Office.
Functional knowledge of refreshable braille devices and digital recorders.
