MTCB Braille Poker Run

Thanks, so much for your support in our first annual Blind and Vision Impaired Braille Poker Run. Although the participantion was much lower then expected, the nine drivers had a great time and the weather was perfect! Lots of door prizes were given away and everyone arrvived safetly.

Thank you to the following companies for their donations and making our first annaul poker run a sucess; Boswells Harley Davidson, Bumpus Harley Davidson, Howards Honda, Cool Springs Honda, Sloans, T & A Cycles, Cool Springs Harley Davidson, Bost Harley Davidson, and Cycle Gear.

The goals of the Mid-Tennessee Council of the Blind are:

  • to expand the social, economic and cultural opportunities for blind persons in Tennessee;

  • to encourage and assist such persons in becoming more active, productive and responsible member of the community;

  • to enhance the educational and rehabilitative services available to blind persons in Tennessee;

  • to inform blind persons of available opportunities and services in education, employment, recreation, and other areas of common concern;

  • to inform the general public of the capabilities and accomplishments of blind persons and of the importance of providing specialized education to assist such persons to meet their full responsibilities as citizens.

Some of the programs that MTCB offers the membership include:

  • Physical- twice monthly bowling, Blind Golf, Fishing, tandem cycling, exercise class.

  • Social - Supper Club that visits different restaurants, quarterly luncheons that include Bingo and an annual summer picnic.

  • Educational- computer training classes, outreach program visiting senior centers, retirement homes, churches to assist individuals who may be experiencing loss of vision for the first time. Provide training on accessible voting machines.

  • Financially supplement members attendance at TPAC live narration programs and movie tickets to Opry Mills and Hollywood 27 where audio description is available. Provide scholarships to blind and visually impaired students.

  • Reimburse Access Ride tickets for organized events. (Each ride cost 3.20)

  • Support- The council was instrumental in the implementation of an audio tour with tactile maps for the blind to use at Centennial Park. Make adaptive devices readily available for newly blinded persons. Representatives participate in both a State and Federal Legislative seminars where open discussion is held with elected leaders regarding important issues that impact the blind and visually impaired. Provide resource information and support to blinded persons and their families.
