2017 Durward K. McDaniel First-Timer Award Recipients

The DKM First-Timers Committee is pleased to announce the selection of two deserving individuals who met all of the requirements for the DKM First-Timers Program, which was implemented in honor of Durward K. McDaniel.

Congratulations is extended to the following 2017 recipients:

J. R. Kinnison of Bremmerton, Washington 

J. R. is employed by the Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind and currently serves as President of his local chapter, Peninsula Council of the blind with past experience as a member of the board of directors, as well as being active on the Event Planning Committee and in fundraising efforts. He is connected to his community as a member of the local Lions Club, serves on the ADA Compliance Advisory Committee, provides input while advocating for the needs of passengers who are blind, during public transit meetings. Since becoming a member of the Washington Council of the Blind, he serves on the membership committee and was selected to participate in the affiliate Leadership Seminar.

Graham Steel of Riverside, Wyoming

Graham stepped up at a crucial time in her affiliate and is currently serving her first term as President of the Wyoming Council of the Blind. She began her service on the Board of Directors as a Director two years ago. She is eager to learn and share leadership skills she has gained.  She has taken the lead in planning her affiliate convention and overseeing the daily up-dates of changing government issues or laws that are effecting people who are blind or visually impaired. She is active in fundraising and has initiated and succeeded while facilitating a group fundraiser. Graham recently attended the state legislative meeting and was honored to meet and greet key decision makers within the community and state. She considers it a privilege to have been able to advocate for others by sharing issues of concern to all who have experienced vision loss.
